Install on Linux
Every package is 64-bit (x86_64). Heronite draws its window with Vulkan, so you need a working Vulkan driver: Mesa for AMD and Intel, or the proprietary driver for NVIDIA.
| System | File | Install |
|---|---|---|
| Any distribution (recommended), SteamOS | Heronite-x86_64.AppImage | chmod +x Heronite-x86_64.AppImage && ./Heronite-x86_64.AppImage |
| Debian 12+, Ubuntu 22.04+, Mint, Pop!_OS | heronite_<version>-1_amd64.deb | sudo apt install ./heronite_*_amd64.deb |
| Fedora 36+, openSUSE | heronite-<version>-1.x86_64.rpm | sudo dnf install ./heronite-*.x86_64.rpm |
| Arch, Manjaro, EndeavourOS, CachyOS | heronite-<version>-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst | sudo pacman -U heronite-*-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst |
Keep the AppImage in a folder you can write to, like ~/Applications, so it can update itself. On the Steam Deck, follow the Steam Deck guide.
Install on Windows
Windows 10 and 11 are supported. The installer installs Heronite for your user into %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Heronite, with no administrator rights needed. The portable zip runs from any folder or USB drive and keeps your library, settings and screenshots in that folder.
SmartScreen. The files are not code-signed yet, so Windows may say it protected your PC. Choose More info, then Run anyway.
Logging in to Epic Games, GOG or Amazon uses the Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime. Windows 11 has it; on Windows 10, install it from Microsoft if the login window asks for it.
After installing
On the first start Heronite finds your Steam games, your emulators and your ROM folders automatically. Then log in to your other stores on the Stores page. The getting started guide walks through the rest, and the full installation docs cover updates and removal.
Prefer to build it yourself? The source code is on GitHub, with every release and its notes.
Download questions
Which file should I download?
On Windows, the installer. On Linux, the AppImage works on almost every distribution and updates itself; pick the .deb, .rpm or Arch package if you prefer your package manager.
Why does Windows show a SmartScreen warning?
The Windows files are not code-signed yet, so SmartScreen does not recognise them. Choose More info, then Run anyway. Every release is still signed with minisign, and Heronite checks that signature before it installs an update.
Does Heronite update itself?
It checks GitHub for a new release shortly after it starts and then every 6 hours. The AppImage, the Windows installer and the portable copy update in place; the .deb, .rpm and Arch packages install through pkexec after you confirm. See Installation.
What do I need on Linux?
A 64-bit (x86_64) system with a working Vulkan driver: Mesa for AMD and Intel, or the NVIDIA driver. Tools like gamescope, bubblewrap and Ludusavi are optional and each turns on a feature.
Can I run it from a USB drive?
Yes, with the Windows portable zip. The program, your Collection, settings and screenshots all stay in that folder. See Files and folders.
